Desperate screams for help were heard before a woman was killed in a block of flats yesterday afternoon. 

Police were called to Quarry Green Heights in Liverpool at 4.40pm on December 23 to reports of a disturbance. 

A 20-year-old woman was taken to hospital in a critical condition but despite the efforts of emergency workers, she died.

A 19-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder.

'I thought I could hear someone screaming for help out of one of the windows, then the next minute loads of police came flying into the car park,' one neighbour told police

Others living at the tower block believe they heard screams for help from a flat window shortly before police arrived.

One neighbour told the Liverpool Echo: 'I thought I could hear someone screaming for help out of one of the windows, then the next minute loads of police came flying into the car park.

'I didn't know the young lady had died but that's awful news, especially this close to Christmas.'

Another added: 'I've lived here for six years and it's typically been quite quiet until recently, this is such an awful thing to happen. I've heard that she was shouting for help.'

A 19-year-old man from Liverpool was arrested by officers on suspicion of murder. 

An investigation has been launched and a cordon is in place on Quarry Green while extensive CCTV, house-to-house and forensic enquiries are carried out.

Detective Inspector Laura Lamping said: 'Our thoughts first and foremost are with the victim's family.

'We are in the extremely early stages of this investigation and our officers are working to establish exactly what happened.

'While we have already made an arrest, our enquiries continue in the area and we would appeal to anyone with any information on this tragic incident to please come forward and speak with our officers.'
