Nazi graffiti which had appeared on a wall in South Belfast has been condemned.

The "disgusting" graffiti was written on a wall close to Queen's University and had a swastika drawn beside it.

Botanic councillor Gary McKeown said that he was sent a picture of the graffiti by an outraged local resident and said that it had caused upset in the area.

He praised the Belfast City Council staff who came to the scene within minutes of the graffiti being reported and had it quickly removed.

Councillor McKeown said: "I'm disgusted at the hate graffiti that appeared on a wall in South Belfast. This is a diverse and welcoming area so this has caused a lot of unease in the community.

"People who appear in the dark of night and scrawl bile like this on walls have nothing to offer. They should wise up and start contributing something to the community instead of trying to sow hatred.

"I want to thank council staff who were on the ground removing this within minutes of me calling it through, and would urge anyone who comes across anything similar to report it as no one should have to face this in the area where they live."
