A man has been arrested by detectives investigating the murder of journalist Martin O’Hagan.

Mr O’Hagan was killed by loyalist paramilitaries in Lurgan, Co Armagh in 2001. No-one has ever been successfully prosecuted for his murder.

The PSNI confirmed on Friday morning that detectives from its Legacy Investigation Branch have arrested a 42-year-old man as part of the overall investigation.

He was arrested in the Sheffield area on Thursday morning, with the assistance of Counter Terrorism Policing North East and South Yorkshire Police, and has been transported to Northern Ireland for questioning in the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station.

A PSNI spokesperson added: "Detectives also conducted a search of a property in the Sheffield area as part of the operation."

Last September the UK government was pressed to hold an independent inquiry into the murder of Mr O’Hagan.

The National Union of Journalists (NUJ) general secretary Michelle Stanistreet and assistant general secretary Seamus Dooley wrote to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, Secretary of State Hilary Benn, First Minister Michelle O’Neill, deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly and Taoiseach Simon Harris calling for an independent inquiry into the killing.
