Man taken to hospital as PSNI Armed Response Unit called to early morning incident

A man aged in his 30s has been taken to hospital with deep lacerations to his head and body following an altercation involving around five people in Co Down on Saturday morning.

The PSNI's Armed Response Unit were called to the incident in Burren Meadows, Newcastle just after 10.55am following reports of an altercation involving around five people, one or more of whom was believed to be armed with a weapon.

A 27 year old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of a number of offences after the injured man was discovered. It is believed that his wounds were caused by a broken bottle.

Detective Sergeant Johnston said: "We received a report just after 10.55am that an altercation was ongoing in the Burren Meadows area involving around five people, one or more of whom was believed to have been armed with a weapon.

"Local policing officers were immediately dispatched to the scene alongside an Armed Response Unit. One man, aged in his 30s, was found with deep lacerations to his head and body and taken to hospital for treatment. It is believed that these wounds were caused by a broken bottle.

"A 27-year-old man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

"Our investigation is ongoing, and a link to an earlier burglary in the Burren Meadows area is one line of enquiry.

"We would appeal to anyone who was in the area between 10am and 11am, who may have witnessed anything suspicious, to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 500 of 15/03/25."
