The suspects fled downstairs and out the back of the house on foot. They are described as being aged in their early 20s, of slim build and were wearing dark-clothing with snoods.

Medical treatment was provided to the man for his injuries, and he was taken onward to hospital by colleagues from the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service.

Newry City Councillor Aidan Mathers has said that the incident was an extremely worrying act and had caused great fear and concern.

Cllr Mathers said: “This is an extremely worrying incident and it has caused great fear amongst the local community. We send our best wishes to the man injured and we hope he makes a full recovery from the trauma inflicted on him by these thugs.”

The Sinn Féin elected representative added: “Anyone who may have noticed recent suspicious activity in the area should make it known to the police. These criminals are motivated by greed and care nothing about the damage they inflict”.
