Man charged following serious Co Down assault

A man has been charged to court following a serious assault in Co Down.

The incident occurred on the Burren Meadows area of Newcastle on Saturday.

A 27-year-old man has been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and possession of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

He is due to appear before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Detective Sergeant Johnston said: "We received a report just after 10.55am that an altercation was ongoing in the Burren Meadows area involving around five people, one or more of whom was believed to have been armed with a weapon.

"Local policing officers were immediately dispatched to the scene alongside an Armed Response Unit. One man, aged in his 30s, was found with deep lacerations to his head and body and taken to hospital for treatment. It is believed that these wounds were caused by a broken bottle."
