Man charged after armed police deployed in Newtownards

The PSNI deployed armed police officers in Newtownards over the weekend to "assist colleagues" as a man was arrested for disorderly behaviour, drug offences and resisting police.

A man, aged 35, has since been charged and is due in court in January.

A police spokesperson said: "Armed response officers were deployed to the Ards and North Down area over the weekend to assist colleagues in the district. An individual was swiftly detained and arrested for disorderly behaviour, possession of Class A and C controlled drugs and resisting arrest."

A police spokesperson later added: "Police in Newtownards have charged a man to court with disorderly behaviour, possession of a Class A controlled drug, possession of a Class C controlled drug, and resisting police.

"The man, aged 35, is expected to appear before Newtownards Magistrates Court on January 17th.

"As is usual procedure, all charges will be reviewed by the Public Prosecution Service."
