Man breathalysed nearly four times legal limit in NI town, say police

A man who "appeared intoxicated" while sitting in a vehicle gave a breath test that was nearly four times the legal limit near Armagh city centre, police say.

The legal limit for a breath test is 35. Police said the man gave a reading of 143 when he was breathalysed, and provided an evidential reading of 126 after being "conveyed to custody".

The reported incident happened on Wednesday morning in the Navan Street area of Armagh.

In a social media post published by PSNI in the Armagh, Banbridge & Craigavon district, a spokesperson said: "This morning officers from B Section Armagh responded to a report from a member of the public regarding a male who appeared intoxicated sitting in a vehicle within the vacinity of Navan Street, Armagh.

A preliminary breath test was conducted, resulting in a fail with a reading of 143 with the legal limit being 35. The male was conveyed to custody and provided an evidential reading of 126. This male will now have his day in court."

The police spokesperson added: "It is an offence to be in charge of a vehicle while over the prescribed limit of alcohol. The message is simple. Never ever drink and drive."
