Man and woman arrested following viral altercation in Ballymena

A man and a woman have been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences following an altercation in Ballymena town centre.

A video of the incident has been shared widely on social media and shows a man and a woman arguing with a person inside of vehicle on Ballymoney Street at around 2.20pm on Saturday, March 1.

In the video, the man and the woman can be heard shouting threats and homophobic slurs before the woman appears to attempt to hit the vehicle with a weapon.

The driver of the vehicle then appears to drive towards the woman before hitting a parked car.

Two people, a man in his 40s and a woman in her 30s have since been arrested on suspicion of a number of offences and remain in police custody at this time.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police received a report of an altercation involving a number of people in the Ballymoney Street area of Ballymena at approximately 2.20pm on Saturday 1st March.

"Officers attended and a two people were arrested.

"A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of two counts of attempted grievous bodily harm, failing to report an accident whereby injury was caused and dangerous driving.

"A woman aged 32, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon in a public place, criminal damage and disorderly behaviour. Both remain in police custody at this time.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone who may have witnessed the altercation or anyone with CCTV or other footage that could assist with the investigation is asked to contact 101 quoting reference 860 01/03/25.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous and gives people the power to speak up and stop crime."
