LG Innotek announced Tuesday the development of a high-performance in-cabin camera module for vehicles equipped with a five-megapixel RGB-IR dual sensor. RGB stands for red, green and blue, while IR refers to infrared.
The high-performance in-cabin camera module is installed inside vehicles and can be mounted in various locations, such as the rearview mirror or above the passenger seat. It allows real-time monitoring of occupants by detecting the driver’s condition — such as drowsiness or lack of attention — and checking whether passengers in the front or rear seats have fastened their seat belts.
While previously released in-cabin cameras were primarily limited to specific functions like the Driver Monitoring System and the Occupant Monitoring System, the new module can perform multiple functions with a single camera.
With a five-megapixel resolution — approximately five times higher than existing products — the module delivers clearer images for more precise occupant monitoring. It can also be used for entertainment purposes, such as video calls and virtual meetings, which will gain importance as autonomous driving technology progresses. The infrared detection feature enables accurate monitoring of the driver’s condition, including drowsiness, even at night, while the expanded horizontal field of view ensures visibility of second-row seats.
The high-performance in-cabin camera module is also 15 percent smaller than existing products. Its reduced size offers greater flexibility in mounting positions, allowing automakers to optimize interior space and improve design flexibility.
Building on the launch of the high-performance heating camera module and high-performance LiDAR earlier this year, LG Innotek has further expanded its vehicle sensing solution lineup with the introduction of the high-performance in-cabin camera module.
“Vehicle sensing solutions, including camera modules and LiDAR, are core pillars of LG Innotek’s autonomous driving component business, alongside vehicle communication and lighting. By 2030, we aim to grow our vehicle sensing solution business to exceed 2 trillion won,” said Moon Hyuk-soo, CEO of LG Innotek.
LG Innotek plans to unveil its latest innovations, including the RGB-IR in-cabin camera module, at CES 2025 in Las Vegas in January.
