Kyran Durnin suspect told taxi driver he didn't kill schoolboy- but named those who did

A man who was questioned over the disappearance and murder of schoolboy Kyran Durnin told a taxi driver on the night he took his own life that he didn't kill the six-year-old boy - but named those who did.

Anthony Maguire, 36, was "very agitated" in the taxi on the evening of Tuesday, December 17 and was also more concerned over windows smashed at his home than the investigation into the boy's disappearance, the Irish Mirror has revealed.

Maguire, who died suddenly in Drogheda, Co Louth last Tuesday, was travelling to his home in Beechwood in a taxi just hours before he took his own life.

He was arrested on Thursday, December 12 and quizzed by gardai as part of the investigation into the disappearance and murder of Kyran, 6.

Less than a week later he took his own life and there are now fears he may have taken the secrets of what happened to Kyran to his grave. Maguire, a convicted criminal, left a note at the scene – but it made no reference to Kyran.

It is understood the taxi driver did not know who Maguire was until they drove into the estate where he lived.

Maguire is then said to have "explained himself" to the taxi driver, sources say, and claimed he didn't kill little Kyran - but named those who did.

"He was in a very agitated state that night but he seemed more concerned about the fact his windows were broken by members of the public than the garda investigation," a source told the Irish Mirror.

"He said he was also paranoid that the media was following him around and he was concerned his photo had been taken. He seemed more bothered by the media and the public and didn't seem to have any regard for little Kyran.

"He said he didn't kill Kyran but named those who did," the source said.

This comes after Irish Mirror also revealed that Kyran's mother Dayla refused to comment on her son's disappearance when approached by us on Saturday afternoon in Ipswich in England.

Dayla, 24, was in the company of a male - who has no connection to the investigation into Kyran's disappearance - and they strolled through the southwest English town on their way to the Ipswich vs Newcastle football match.

When we approached Dayla to see if she had anything she wanted to say or any light to shed on what had happened to her son, she declined to answer.

Dayla told an Irish Mirror reporter: "I'd appreciate it if you would go away from me. Thank you," while the male in her company told us: "Leave her alone."

When pushed again for a comment, Dayla and her companion quickly moved to the ticket queue to get inside the stadium to watch the match.

Gardai believe Kyran may have been murdered up to two years ago, when he was just six years old.

Kyran was reported missing at the end of August and Gardaí spent weeks searching for any trace of him before upgrading the case to murder on October 16.

A grandmother of Kyran Durnin was reportedly recorded on tape saying she last saw the youngster alive on August 28. Rhonda Tyson reportedly said he stayed in her house in Drogheda, Co Louth, with his mother, her daughter Dayla, and had been sleeping on the couch.

She allegedly said the next morning when she woke up, both mother and the child were gone and that Dayla left a note for her on the table saying she needed to get away for a few days.

Her reported account of seeing Kyran recently alive is totally at odds with the view of Gardaí that he has been dead for the last two years. A recorded interview was obtained by the investigative BBC Spotlight team for their programme on the case The Lost Boy screened earlier this month.

Officers are not only trying to solve the young boy's suspected murder – but are also determined to recover his remains. Maguire's arrest came 24 hours after a woman known to Kyran had also been arrested and released without charge.

The woman, who has denied any involvement in Kyran's disappearance, had previously implicated Maguire.
