Korea's agricultural authorities carried out a nationwide disinfection operation Friday at livestock farms and migratory bird habitats amid concerns over the spread of animal diseases following the Lunar New Year holiday.

"Risks for animal disease control have increased due to the rise in the number of people and vehicles traveling across the nation over the holiday," Agricultural Minister Song Mi-ryung said.

"Through the nationwide disinfection operation, I ask officials to thoroughly disinfect animal farms, migratory bird habitats and relevant vehicles," the minister added.

Song also instructed officials to inspect poultry farms raising 100,000 or more chickens to maintain a stable supply of eggs amid concerns over the spread of avian influenza in the country.

As of Saturday, Korea has reported 29 confirmed cases of avian influenza this winter.

"As migratory birds continue to remain in Korea through February, we need to stay vigilant and commit ourselves to quarantine measures to protect farms and ensure a stable supply of agricultural goods," Song said." (Yonhap)
