KNEECAP has been named the 'Best British Independent Film' for 2024.

The winners of the British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) were announced on Sunday at the annual ceremony which saw the film about the Belfast rap trio dominate across the board.

KNEECAP won six other categories at the 2024 BIFA Awards alongside the top prize including 'Best Joint Leads' for Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí in their acting debuts.

Based on the original story of the Irish-language rap group, the film stars the band’s Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap and DJ Próvaí alongside Academy Award nominated Michael Fassbender.

Still from KNEECAP

Set in West Belfast in 2019, it chronicles how fate brings the trio together and how they then go on to 'change the sound of Irish music forever'.

Funding for the film was provided by Northern Ireland Screen, the Irish Language Broadcast Fund, Fís Éireann / Screen Ireland, the BFI (awarding National Lottery funding), Coimisiún na Meán and TG4, with backing from Great Point Media.

Last month, KNEECAP won its legal challenge over a decision by former business secretary Kemi Badenoch to refuse them a £14,250 funding award after the UK Government conceded it was “unlawful”.

They announced they would donate the £14,250 to community groups in the Shankill and Ballymurphy "to create a better future for our young people".
