Judge brands Belfast man 'absolute menace' as he is denied bail for assault on two women

A Belfast man with 115 previous convictions, was branded an "absolute menace" as he was denied bail at Belfast Magistrates Court after facing charges of assaulting two women and theft.

Nathan Graham, Servia Street, Belfast, appeared in court facing two charges of assault against two women following an incident in a flat in the Claremount Court area on Monday, December 16.

He also faced another charge of theft following an incident where a laptop was stolen from a car on October 20 by three men.

The court heard that Graham was in a flat with his two victims when he is alleged to have punched one of the women in the face and pulled her hair violently.

When he was told to leave the flat by the other woman, Graham is then alleged to have punched her in the face while holding the "butt end of a screwdriver" before turning the item around and thrusting it towards the woman.

The court heard the woman was wearing a puffy jacket at the time which helped prevent serious injuries, however she did receive a small cut and grazing. Following this the police were called and as officers arrived on the scene, it was claimed that Graham attempted to flee the area.

It was contended that Graham had been in the flat "partying with his girlfriend and the two women" when the incident occurred.

Regarding the theft on October 20, the court heard that three men had been spotted breaking into a car in the Claremont Street area with a number of items including a laptop being stolen.

The victim is then alleged to have seen Graham in the City Centre on November 16, where they told officers that Graham is the person who stole their items, although while he was later arrested it was for different offences.

The court heard that Graham had 115 previous convictions, including those for theft, assault and possession of offensive weapons, with District Judge Keown calling this "an appalling record". He was also on bail for other offences when the assaults are alleged to have taken place.

Denying Graham bail, he was told that he was "an absolute menace" by Judge Keown and he is due to appear in court again via video-link on January 15, 2025.
