James McClean takes swipe at 'insane' decision as former club sack manager

1 month ago 619

James McClean has launched a blistering attack on Wigan Athletic after his former club sacked manager Shaun Maloney.

With only one win in eight the Latics currently sit in 15th place in League One with Saturday's defeat to Reading leading to Maloney's dismissal.

The 42-year-old is a cult hero at the club having been part of the 2013 FA Cup winning squad before returning as manager 10 years later.

Maloney has had to contend with financial problems and a points deduction during his time in charge as well as losing key men like Thelo Aasgaard, who was sold to Luton Town in January.

McClean highlighted that point as he took to Instagram to blast the decision to sack his former teammate and manager as well as having a swipe at the club's owner Mike Danson, and Sporting Director Gregor Rioch.

McClean posted a screenshot of the Wigan announcement and wrote: "Right Shaun you have to get rid of all your experienced players, here is a bunch of kids, you have no budget by the way either and we will sell your best players each window, but we want you to perform miracles in the league also."

The 35-year-old's post resonated with the club's fans and even his former teammates. Nick Powell posted a melting face emoji in relation to the news. McClean then replied: “Insane stuff. Expecting a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade budget.”
