Emmerdale viewers are on edge, fearing they've pieced together the identity of John Sugden's next target after his dark secrets came to light.

John, played by Oliver Farnworth who joined the ITV soap last year, has been hiding a sinister side beneath a shroud of secrecy.

In Thursday's gripping episode, fans watched in horror as a desperate John poisoned Jacob Gallagher, who has a severe nut allergy, with the twisted aim of rescuing him and being hailed as a hero.

A sequence of flashbacks also unveiled that John had been tormenting and drugging his mother-in-law Chas Dingle while framing Ella Forster for his actions.

Meanwhile, Nate Robinson's fate was finally revealed through a flashback showing John administering medication via a needle following the barn fire, reports Leeds Live.

However, before he could administer another dose of what appeared to be a different drug, Nate tragically passed away, leading John to dispose of his body in the same lake where the limo crash took place.

The unsuspecting villagers believe Nate is in Shetland having secured a new job.

In other developments from Thursday's episode, the village discovered that Nate's estranged wife, Tracy Metcalfe, had been pilfering money from Eric Pollard after Nate went missing and failed to send any child maintenance funds.

On Friday's episode, Nate's father, Cain Dingle, was left concerned about his son

In Friday's episode, Nate's father, Cain Dingle, expressed concern for his son as he informed John and Aaron Dingle that he was caring for Nate's daughter Frankie.

He commented: "Tracy's got enough to deal with after yesterday!", and continued: "I wish she had told us Nate's not been stumping up any cash. I don't understand this disappearing act.."

As John sets his sights on various villagers, while trying to keep his dark secret hidden, could Cain be his next target due to his increasing concerns about Nate?

If that's the case, it's likely to spark outrage among viewers, given Cain's long-standing popularity as a village favourite since 2000.

Emmerdale airs weeknights on ITV1 and ITVX at 7.30pm
