In a gripping turn of events, Emmerdale said goodbye to Joe Tate in Monday's episode following his dark and desperate plan.
Just the previous week, Joe devised a plot that left viewers reeling, orchestrating a brutal attack that resulted in Caleb Milligan being stabbed, all with the intention of obtaining his kidney. The nail-biting sequences saw Caleb fighting for his life, at one point even flat-lining on the operating table, keeping fans glued to their screens.
The tension continued as Joe's personal physician, Dr Crowley, successfully rescued Caleb and carried out the kidney transplant. Following the operation, Dr Crowley concocted a cover story and deposited Caleb at a hospital, claiming emergency surgery had necessitated the removal of his kidney due to the location of the stab wound.
Come Monday, Joe, who had battled chronic kidney disease and now with Caleb's kidney, devised an escape from the village, setting his sights on Dubai.
Having made arrangements for his co-conspirator, Shaun, recently released by police pending investigation, to fly to Thailand, Joe informed Dr Crowley of his own impending move to Dubai, where medical help awaited him, reports Leicestershire Live.
With well-wishes exchanged between Joe and Dr Crowley, they both heralded their exits, Dr Crowley announcing, "I'm out of here!" echoed by Joe's acknowledgment, "Yeah, me too, time to move on!"
The episode closed with Joe departing for the airport, symbolically deleting Dawn Fletcher from his phone contacts after their illicit romance.
Fans of the soap have been left scratching their heads, pondering if Joe has made his final exit, particularly as he seems to have executed his vile scheme without any repercussions.
Yet, it looks like Joe, who made a dramatic return in December after a six-year hiatus, is set for a downfall, suggesting that we might see him back in the village soon.
An Emmerdale spokesperson told Metro: "Emmerdale covers a wide ranging scope of subjects in its storytelling. From births to deaths and everything in between, the nightly stories entertain, inform and raise awareness.
"We regularly work with organisations, help groups and charities for the portrayal of many of these subjects. But sometimes our characters go rogue acting out of desperation or whilst under pressure. Joe Tate’s desperate actions are not being held up as an example and as with any soap villain he will ultimately get his comeuppance."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
