Jim Magilton has offered an honest mid-season report on Cliftonville's season, admitting his side "could do better".

It was a summer of change for the Solitude outfit who lost a number of key personnel including Ronan Hale, Ben Wilson and Sam Ashford, while legendary midfielder Chris Curran retired.

Several new faces arrived in North Belfast to bolster the ranks, leading to some early-season inconsistency.

Despite the upheaval, Magilton's Cliftonville sit second in the Irish Premiership ahead of Saturday's trip to Portadown.

Magilton joked:

"Like my old school reports, we could do better. We had a lot of changes and it took players a little bit more time to settle into the club and the league.

"Once we got that consistency, we had a little spell where we played extremely well. We had total control in a couple of games and that gave us great confidence.

"I know we are capable of more, which is good. If I thought we were at the height of our powers I would worry. There is more to come from all the players, and we will be looking to strengthen in January.

"I always had great faith in the players we retained. That was never an issue. I knew our attacking prowess would continue to deliver, especially Joe (Gormley) who has produced the goods this season."
