Irish League legends disagree over Andy Ryan red card being overturned

Former Linfield captain Michael Gault has questioned the decision to overturn Andy Ryan's red card against the Blues on Tuesday night.

Ryan was shown a straight red by referee Shane Andrews just before half-time following a challenge on Kyle McClean.

The tackle - and dismissal - sparked a widespread debate among fans, former players and managers.

But following an appeal by Larne, the red card has been rescinded.

Former Portadown defender Philip Major and ex-Linfield midfielder Gault were asked about the ruling on BBC Sportsound on Saturday.

And they offered contrasting opinions on the controversy.

Asked if it was right to rescind the red, Major said: "I think so. No criticism of the referee, it was one of those ones where I think he (Ryan) was falling before he actually for into the challenge which made it look so awkward.

"I don't think there was really any intent to do damage to Kyle McClean, and ultimately Kyle was able to get up and play on. These things happen in football, and it is very difficult when you're in the centre of the pitch.

"Again, you're thinking was he out of control or was it reckless. My view, after watching it several times, was it was a typical centre forward's challenge, but he was falling before it happened and lost all co-ordination.

"It was an apology of a tackle and his reaction afterwards said it all."

Asked if he had a similar view, former Linfield captain Gault said: "Not really, no. I can see why he was given a red card.

"I don't think to have it appealed and overturned was the right decision. Once it was given a red then, okay, that was it. I can see why the referee gave it.

"Since he gave the red I don't think there could be many complaints. I don't think it should have been overturned.

"I don't think he meant to do it. It was reckless. Back in my day it probably seems a good tackle, but the referee gave a red card and I believe they should have stuck with that decision."
