Irish dad dies after being stung by swarm of wasps while gardening

An Irish man has died after he was stung by a swarm of wasps while he was gardening at his home.

Dad-of-three Michael Sheehan, who was aged in his mid-50s, is believed to have unintentionally disturbed a nest of wasps while cutting his hedge and suffered multiple stings, CorkBeo reports. It happened shortly after midday on Tuesday November 5 at a property near Macroom town, in Cork.

Mr Sheehan is reported to have later collapsed at the scene. An air ambulance was dispatched to the incident and he received medical treatment, however he was pronounced dead at the scene.

His body has been taken to CUH for a post-mortem examination.

Speaking to CorkBeo, local Cllr. Martin Coughlan said: "A man was working in his own garden and suffered a number of wasp stings. He later passed away and an air ambulance was on the scene for approximately an hour.

"This is an incredibly unfortunate incident and I offer my deepest condolences to his family. He was well-known in the area."

A Garda spokesperson said: "Gardaí and emergency services responded to a report of an incident in Macroom, Co. Cork, on Tuesday 5th November 2024.

"A man (50s) was pronounced deceased at the scene. The coroner has been notified."
