Sally Lindsay, a renowned British actress and comedian, has been gracing our screens for many years. She is best known for her roles in popular programmes such as ITV's Coronation Street, Loose Women, and Still Open All Hours.

Interestingly, it was Sally's comedic prowess that catapulted her to fame. After starting her career as a stand-up comedian post-theatre school, her northern wit and charm caught the eye of Peter Kay, who subsequently cast her in Phoenix Nights.

Her success on the comedy series led to her landing the role of Michelle, Twiggy's girlfriend, in the hit show The Royal Family in 2000. However, her major on-screen breakthrough came in 2001 when she joined the iconic Coronation Street as Shelley Unwin.

During her time on the soap, she appeared in an impressive 750 episodes and even bagged the Best Actress award at the Inside Soap Awards in 2005. Post-Corrie, Sally's career took a different turn as she now leads the popular Channel 5 detective series The Madame Blanc Mysteries.

In addition to acting, Sally has also hosted her own show, Posh Weekends, where she stays at some of the UK's most luxurious homes. This weekend, viewers can catch her on Channel 5 presenting - Sally Lindsay's 70s Quiz Night, reports Plymouth Live.

Sally Lindsay is set to take charge of a new show that's all about celebrating the 1970s, with team captains John Thomson and Shaparak Khorsandi by her side, as well as a lineup of celebrity guests.

Told she'd 'never make it'

Despite her successful career on screen, Sally was initially drawn to radio journalism. While at Hull University, she hosted her own radio show and aspired to be an on-air host.

However, her ambitions were thwarted when she was told her accent was "too northern" for radio.

In a previous interview with The Express, Sally shared her experience: "I got rejected by all the local radio stations, because they didn't like northern accents, even though I was in Hull!"

Her love for radio journalism persisted despite facing comments such as, 'We don't need a female Terry Christian thanks very much'. Reflecting on those times, she noted the scarcity of regional accents on the radio during the '90s.

Before her acting and comedy ventures, Sally also experienced chart-topping success as a child star. Hailing from Stockport, Greater Manchester, she made her debut on BBC One TV at just seven years old.

She once graced the Top of the Pops stage with St Winifred's School Choir, clinching the top spot in 1980 with their hit There's No One Quite Like Grandma.

Sally's other half is none other than Steve White, a renowned drummer who has played with music legends such as Paul Weller and the Style Council.

The couple's romance culminated in a star-studded wedding in 2013, attended by famous pals like Gok Wan, Alan Carr, Suranne Jones, and Denise Welch.

Sally and Steve are proud parents to twin boys, Louie and Victor, and Sally has often spoken about how her family has transformed her life, especially within the demanding entertainment industry.

In a candid chat with Prima magazine, Sally shared insights into her marriage: "Steve and I have been together 20 years and married for 10. Working away a lot is what keeps the spark in our marriage – I genuinely believe that. We always have loads to talk about."

She continued to praise her husband's role in her professional life: "Steve is the head of music on my shows. He'll ask me what I want and I'll come up with the most obscure, ridiculous references, but he'll know what I mean because he's my husband."

Sally didn't hold back in expressing her admiration for Steve, saying: "He has a vast musical knowledge. He's a brilliant man; he's lovely and he's sexy and he's funny – and a rock star, which helps! He's also the best dad."

The Madame Blanc Mysteries returns to Channel 5 on Thursday, April 17 from 9pm and Sally Lindsay's 70s Quiz Night will air on Channel 5, on Saturday April 19 at 9pm.
