Ukrainians living in Northern Ireland are marking the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion. Monday marks three years since Moscow’s full-scale invasion on February 24 2022.

Hundreds of Ukrainians gathered on Sunday for a special event at Belfast City Hall to mark the anniversary. A minute's silence was held to remember all Ukrainians – and those fighting for peace – who have lost their lives in the conflict.

The crowd held signs criticising Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many personal stories related to the conflict were also displayed on posters at Belfast City Hall.

Candles were laid on the ground beside posters of Ukrainian people with details about how the invasion had affected them. The Ukrainian flag was draped over the gates at City Hall.

Relations between the US and Europe have been strained after US President Donald Trump hit out at Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last week. The US president called Ukraine’s leader a “dictator” and appeared to accuse Ukraine of starting the war as his officials met Russian officials to discuss ending the conflict.

Addressing the event, Belfast Lord Mayor Micky Murray said he was showing solidarity to the people of Ukraine.

The commemoration was organised by the Ukrainians in Northern Ireland Community Group. The Ukrainian national anthem was played at the event.
