The sun glistens off the sea as people congregate in nothing but swimwear and Santa hats. The smell of suncream fills the air while music and the sound of cocktail shakers ring out. This is Christmas with a difference - the Dubai way.
Christmas in the UAE doesn't exactly scream snow or cosy pubs, but the winter sunshine is exactly what persuaded me to head abroad for December 25 for the first time ever.
Dubai stands out as a city in constant evolution, with world-class restaurants, beaches, architecture and - most importantly for some - year-round sunshine.

And, as I found out, there’s nothing about a Christmas in Dubai that means you’ve got to sacrifice any of your traditions – Guinness in an Irish bar included - despite it not being a public holiday.
Here's why you should consider Dubai for your next winter getaway...
The weather
Waking up to 25C on Christmas Day, you say? Dubai's enviable climate, characterised by year-round sunshine, makes it an ideal destination for sun-seekers and outdoor enthusiasts alike - even in the winter.
With consistently warm temperatures and clear skies, visitors can enjoy Dubai's attractions and activities at any time of the year. Average temperatures in December are highs of 26C and lows of 17C, making the perfect conditions to relax or explore.
If eating your Christmas dinner outdoors sounds like heaven, that's exactly what you'll get. It might sound a bit weird, but you'll have forgotten about that part when washing it down with a cold drink on the terrace.
Try one of Dubai's many famous bottomless brunch spots, or if a traditional Christmas dinner is more your thing check out Mezzanine Bar & Kitchen.
Unrivalled luxury
If there's one thing Dubai prides itself on, it's first-class service. No more so than on the seven-star Encore superyacht. Operated by Xclusive Yachts, the 40-metre tri-deck superyacht takes guests on a once-in-a-lifetime journey from Dubai Harbour to the Burj Al Arab, navigating the jaw-dropping coastline of Palm Jumeirah.
Try the Sollis package (4-7pm) to catch sunset in style and experience Zen-Zed gastronomy, a live sushi station, free-flowing champagne and cocktails, to the backdrop of a live saxophonist and DJ. If sea swimming is your thing, the captain will anchor off Dubai Marina, where guests can take a dip with views of Ain Dubai. It's safe to say those views and first-class luxury will live long in the memory.
For different packages to suit all tastes and budgets, see the Xclusive Yachts website.
The Christmas market
Yes, you read that right. Despite not being a public holiday, Christmas is still widely celebrated in Dubai and there are plenty of seasonal attractions to keep you entertained.
There are winter markets across the city where you can pick up one-of-a-kind gifts and souvenirs while enjoying family-friendly activities. Popular attractions include the Winter City at Expo City Dubai, the Winter District at Dubai Media City Amphitheatre, Souk Madinat Jumeirah’s Christmas Market (right next to Mezzanine), and Habtoor Palace Dubai’s Winter Garden.
Alternatively, you can embrace the seasonal spirit at Ski Dubai with a range of activities from skiing and snowboarding down the slopes to toboggan runs.
At Dubai Mall, families can shop, skate and visit Santa in December. At the Olympic-sized Dubai Ice Rink kids and big kids can learn to skate and the rink also played host to last year's Grotto.
Jaw-dropping views
Dubai's cultural landscape is as diverse as its skyline, offering a blend of traditional and contemporary experiences.
The city's skyline is a testament to architectural innovation, boasting mind-bending structures such as the Burj Khalifa and Museum of the Future.
Yet, amid these modern marvels, the city preserves its rich heritage through traditional architecture, exemplified by the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood. Best explored on foot, this area offers nostalgic views of a bygone era with traditional wind towers and alleyways, positioned along the historic waterways of Dubai Creek.
Fancy a dip in the world's highest 360-degree infinity pool? Head to Aura Skypool on the 50th floor of Nakheel’s Palm Tower for bird's-eye views of the Palm Jumeirah and Burj Al Arab.
Culinary excellence
If you're heading away to escape the traditional dinner (even though it's arguably the best part of Christmas), fear not. Dubai’s gastronomy landscape stands as a testament to its status as a modern culinary capital, boasting 13,000 restaurants and cafes offering a range of dining experiences.
The city has emerged as a magnet for top-tier culinary talent, attracting renowned chefs from around the globe. Notable establishments like Row on 45 by Jason Atherton at Grosvenor House, a Luxury Collection Hotel, and Dinner by Heston Blumenthal at Atlantis The Royal, exemplify Dubai's ascent in the realm of fine dining.
Dubai's culinary acclaim extends internationally, evident in its dominance of MENA's 50 Best Restaurants 2024 list, where the city secured the top four spots.
Golden beaches
Dubai's coastline extends from the southwest of the city to the outskirts of neighbouring emirates in the northeast. Stretching along the Arabian Gulf, the city's beaches offer something for everyone, from those looking to cool off to luxurious resorts and vibrant beach clubs.
Known for its wide range of activities, Kite Beach in Umm Suqeim is one of Dubai’s most famous beaches and is perfect for families and adventure seekers. It offers facilities for kitesurfing, paddleboarding, and beach volleyball, plus a dedicated cycling and jogging track and various beach cafés. Other popular public beaches include The Beach at Jumeirah Beach Residence (JBR), Sunset Beach in Umm Suqeim, and Al Mamzar Beach Park.
J1 Beach is one of Dubai’s most anticipated new attractions. Located in Jumeirah 1, J1 Beach features a range of luxury beach clubs and beachfront restaurants.
