How to maximise your annual leave for 2025 using Northern Ireland Bank Holiday days

As we move into the New Year and all the Christmas fun is behind us, you may be looking ahead to your next holiday.

If you are someone who always needs to have a trip or break planned to get you through the year, you may be wondering when is the best time to take off in 2025.

Northern Ireland has the most number of Bank Holiday Days in the UK each year with ten - just ahead of Scotland on nine and England and Wales on eight.

The Bank Holiday Dates for Northern Ireland in 2025 are:

1 January - New Year’s Day 17 March - St Patrick’s Day 18 April- Good Friday 21 April - Easter Monday 5 May - Early May bank holiday 26 May - Spring bank holiday 14 July - Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day) (substitute day) 25 August - Summer bank holiday 25 December - Christmas Day 26 December - Boxing Day

In Northern Ireland, every UK full-time worker is entitled to paid annual leave to use throughout the year but the number of days varies - with the legal minimum for people who work a 5-day week being 28 days.

If you use your annual leave carefully when booking days off, you can maximise the number of days you have off by making the most of Bank Holidays and long weekends.

Here is how to book 25 days of annual leave to get 59 days off in NI in 2025:

St Patrick's Day (March 17) - Book Friday, March 14 = 4 days off for 1 day annual leave Good Friday (April 18) and Easter Monday (April 21) - Book Friday, April 11, Monday, April 14 to Thursday, April 17 = 11 days off for 5 days annual leave Early May bank holiday (May 5) - Book Tuesday, May to Friday, May 9 = 9 days off for 4 days annual leave Spring Bank holiday (May 26) - Book Tuesday, May 27 to Friday, May 30 = 9 days off for 4 days annual leave Battle of the Boyne substitute day (July 14) - Book Friday, July 11 = 4 days off for 1 day annual leave Summer bank holiday (August 25) - Book Tuesday, August 26 to Friday, August 29 = 9 days off for 4 days annual leave Christmas Day (December 25) and Boxing Day (December 26) - Book Monday, December 22 to Wednesday, December 24 and Monday, December 29 to Wednesday, December 31 = 13 days off (including New Year's Day 2026) for 6 days annual leave
