"Hand yourself in" Unlawfully at large murderer, 55, wanted by police

Police have appealed for a convicted murderer, who is unlawfully at large for the second timee in three years to "hand himself in".

James Meehan, 55, who was convicted of the murder of Derry man Jim McFadden in 2009, is currently unlawfully at large after failing to return to HMP Magilligan on Monday, December 9, from day release.

In October 2022, Meehan had been freed and allowed to live at an address in Limavady, however was later found not to been at the address and was charged with being unlawfully at large. He then spent 14 months on the run before being returned to jail after being extradited from the Republic of Ireland.

Police are asking anyone who spots Meehan to not approach him directly and to call polic on 101. The force has also urged Meehan directly to hand himself in.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are appealing for information to assist in locating 55-year-old James Meehan, who is currently unlawfully at large.

"Meehan, who has been serving a life sentence in prison following a murder conviction in 2009, was on day release from HMP Magilligan on Monday, 9th December however has failed to return.

"We are appealing to anyone who has seen him, or who knows of his whereabouts, not to approach him directly but to contact police on 101, quoting reference 1251 09/12/24.

"Alternatively, information can also be provided to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 which is 100% anonymous. Police would also appeal directly to James to hand himself in."
