Gavin and Stacey fans brand BAFTA snubs for BBC show 'ridiculous' as they vent fury

Gavin and Stacey devotees are reeling in shock and dismay after the beloved sitcom received a sole nomination in the BAFTA TV awards, with Ruth Jones being recognised for her iconic portrayal of 'Nessa' in the Female Performance in a Comedy category.

Despite being a fan favourite, the BBC show Gavin and Stacey was notably absent from the Scripted Comedy category, which has instead been dominated by Alma's Not Normal, Brassic, G'Wed, and Ludwig. Fans swiftly took to social media platform X to express their discontent and bewilderment at the snub.

One disgruntled fan declared: "Gavin and Stacey missing out in this category is truly nuts." Another user chimed in: saying: "Yeah I can't believe it. I'm really shocked. It should have been in it one million percent."

A third fan weighed in, commenting: "You could argue that Ludwig (which is good) isn't a comedy but a drama with comedic elements. Seems just ludicrous that the highest viewed, best received isn't included..."

Other reactions ranged from succinct remarks like "ridiculous" and "wow" to queries about the potential reasoning behind the omission.

One user inquired: "Is it because it wasn't a series? Still a bit silly, if so." However, it was swiftly clarified by another user that Gavin and Stacey was, in fact, "totally eligible for this category."

The finale, which boasted an impressive 12.5 million viewers, making it the most-watched Christmas Day show, earned Ruth a well-deserved BAFTA Award nomination for her performance. James Corden, who co-created the show with Ruth and plays 'Smithy', was notably absent from the annual TV awards nominations.

The rest of the cast, including Mathew Horne (Gavin Shipman), Joanna Page (Stacey Shipman), Rob Brydon (Bryn West), and Larry Lamb (Mick Shipman), were also overlooked in all categories. Gavin and Stacey tells the story of two families, one from Essex and the other from Wales, brought together by the love story of the titular characters, Gavin and Stacey.

Their friends, family, and all their baggage come along for the ride in this comedy sitcom, which spans three seasons and first aired on May 13, 2007. The second series graced our screens in March 2008 with seven episodes, and the third series ran from November 2009 to January 2010.

The final episode of Gavin and Stacey, a Christmas special, aired on December 25, 2024, marking 17 years since the first episode's debut. This year, the Netflix series Baby Reindeer leads the BAFTA TV Awards with a total of eight nominations.

Following closely behind are Mr Bates Vs the Post Office and Rivals and Slow Horses, both securing six nominations each. Richard Gadd, star of Baby Reindeer, is nominated for Leading Actor for his role in the show, which is also up for Limited Drama.

Toby Jones from Mr Bates Vs the Post Office and David Tennant from Rivals are also contenders for the Leading Actor award. The BAFTA Television Craft Awards are set to take place on Sunday, April 27, followed by the BAFTA Television Awards on Sunday, May 11. The prestigious event will be hosted by Alan Cumming at London's renowned Royal Festival Hall.
