Gardai probing the horror find of part of a human hand in a north Dublin school now believe it belonged to a child hurt in an accident nearby on Thursday night.

A young boy is in hospital after he lost part of his hand in a gas canister explosion in the same area where Gardai are investigating the discovery of similar human remains.

Sources have confirmed to the Irish Mirror that the remains found in Darndale, north Dublin on Friday afternoon were also part of a human hand and Gardai now believe it belonged to the child.

We have learned that Gardai have recovered high quality CCTV of a bird dropping the hand from its beak on the ground at the school in Darndale. Sources say the hand was found at the Our Lady Immaculate School in Darndale around midday on Friday. The area has been sealed off and a full investigation is underway.

We have also established that a 12-year-old boy is now being treated for horrific hand injuries following last night's incident at a bonfire in Darndale. It's understood he lost his hand when a gas canister exploded. He is being treated for his injuries in the city's Mater Hospital.

Gardai say they are investigating the discovery of the hand at the school.

They said in statement: "Gardai were alerted to the discovery of partial human remains at a premises in Darndale, Dublin 17 this afternoon, Friday, February 21."

"A scene is currently being held and the State Pathologist has been notified, in line with standard practice. The remains will be removed for examination and DNA analysis, which will assist Gardai in confirming the identity and determine the course of the investigation. Enquiries are ongoing."
