GAA President speaks out on Armagh trip allegations for first time on Late Late Show

GAA President Jarlath Burns has spoken publically for the first time about the allegations of a sexual assault having taken place on an Armagh GAA team trip to Miami.

While appearing on the Late Late Show, host Patrick Kielty asked Mr Burns about the allegations and why he has chosen not to comment publically to date.

It is understood that around 100 people, including players, staff and their families, travelled to Miami, Florida, following their All-Ireland success last summer.

The PSNI are continuing to investigate reports of a sexual assault on the trip. In early December, a 30-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and causing a person to engage in sexual activity without consent. He has been released on police bail pending further enquiries.

Speaking on the Late Late Show, Jarlath Burns said: "I haven't spoken publically on it and just because I haven't spoken publically doesn't mean that I haven't been involved, or the Armagh county board haven't been involved or the GAA haven't been involved at every level trying to address this issue.

"There is a right of anonymity to all parties involved in this, a right to privacy. It is an Article 8 right in the Human Rights Act of 1998 and we have to be very, very careful.

"Neither of the parties have waved that anonymity. It is now a matter for other people to deal with. It is not for me to speak about this yet.

"When the time does come, I will speak about it, and it is not the time even for the GAA to act outside of what we have to do legally yet. But when that time comes, we will.

"I would really pay tribute to the amount of work that has gone on behind the scenes. Obviously, because I am an Armagh person when I was setting up the critical incident team, I took myself out of it because, as an Armagh person, I am too close to it, but we have some of the best minds in this country within the GAA and advisors outside."
