Fremont County coroner identifies two people killed in crash over the weekend

ISLAND PARK — A local coroner has released the names of two people who were killed in a crash over the weekend.

Fremont County Coroner Brenda Dye identified a man named Cain Israel Cortes, 49, and a woman named G Palomares Garcia, 49, both from Belgrade, Montana, as the two people who died in the crash.

The two-vehicle crash happened before 3 p.m. Sunday on U.S. Highway 20 at milepost 391.1 near Island Park.

Cortes was driving while Garcia was his passenger. They were traveling eastbound on US-20 in a 2010 GMC Sierra pickup truck, according to Idaho State Police.

A 53-year-old man from Blackfoot and a 52-year-old female passenger from Idaho Falls were traveling westbound in a 2021 Peterbilt semi-truck.

Cortes crossed into the westbound lane where the vehicle was hit by the Peterbilt, ISP said.

Both Cortes and Garcia died from their injuries at the scene.

The passenger of the Peterbilt was transported by air ambulance to a local hospital. It’s unclear what the passenger’s condition is.

Cortes was not wearing a seatbelt, and the passenger of the Peterbilt wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, according to ISP.

The incident is under investigation by Idaho State Police.
