A former surgeon at Daisy Hill hospital has had the sentence for his domestic violence conviction reduced following an appeal.

Dr Colin McCrory of Glenshane Park, Newtownabbey, was convicted of common assault at Laganside Court on November 7, 2024, after he was found guilty of assaulting his wife on May 22, 2024.

It is understood that following the attack, his wife had fled their family home and was picked up by a woman who was unknown to her at the time, who then made the initial complaint to the police.

The 62-year-old former surgeon, who had pleaded not guilty to the assault, was originally given a six month prison sentence following his conviction, along with a restraining order banning him from contact with his victim for two years and a £2,000 compensation order.

Now, following a hearing of the Court of Appeal at Laganside Courthouse on Friday, February 14, McCrory has had this sentence reduced to a six month prison sentence suspended for two years.

Although the compensation order remains in place and the restraining order was extended for one year until November 2027.
