Foreign Minister Cho Tae-yul spoke by phone with his Japanese counterpart Monday to reaffirm South Korea's commitment to advancing its relations with Japan despite the political turmoil from President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment, Cho's office said.

Cho made the point during the phone talks with Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya, highlighting that Seoul's policy toward developing bilateral relations with Tokyo remains "unwavering," Seoul's foreign ministry said in a release.

The ministry quoted Cho as telling Iwaya that "the government under the leadership of acting President Han Duck-soo has been stable in the running of state affairs and that normalcy applies to all economic activities involving foreign investors."

Cho expressed hope that economic cooperation between the countries will continue to move forward.

The two ministers agreed to make thorough preparations to make next year's 60th anniversary of the normalization of bilateral relations meaningful.

In the face of evolving North Korean threats, the two sides also reaffirmed the importance of close coordination between South Korea and Japan, as well as between the two countries and their mutual ally, the United States, and they agreed to continue communication at all levels in this regard.
