FAI forced to apologise for 'Londonderry' error in match programme after James McClean fury

The Football Association of Ireland have been forced to apologise after they accidentally used the word 'Londonderry' in their European Championship play-off match programme.

Eileen Gleeson's Ireland women's national team lost 2-1 to Wales at the Aviva Stadium to end their chances of making a Euros for the first time ever.

An image from the match programme shows where each of the Ireland players either grew up or have family relations from. However, the decision to list Derry as Londonderry has angered some, including McClean.

The Wrexham star, who represented Ireland 103 times, wrote: “The match programme at last night's Ireland vs Wales game at the Aviva Dublin.. disgusting, pathetic, insulting, hang your head in shame you shower of a*******s".

An FAI spokesperson described it as a genuine mistake and apologised.

They said: “The wrong graphic was inadvertently used in an Ireland Women’s National Team match programme, this was a genuine mistake and the FAI apologises for any offence caused.”

Earlier this year, the FAI issued a previous apology following an Under-21 fixture with Latvia when some of the opposition players were described as 'Robert the Liar' and 'Dario S**t' due to a translation error.
