IDAHO FALLS – The unusually cold temperatures aren’t over yet.
On Monday, the National Weather Service in Pocatello issued a cold weather advisory impacting the Rexburg, Rigby and Idaho Falls areas, as well as Arco and Mud Lake.
On Tuesday, the agency’s website indicates an upgrade to an extreme cold warning over the next two nights. The first one is in effect from 8 p.m. Tuesday to 10 a.m. Wednesday. The second one is from 9 p.m. Wednesday to 10 a.m. Thursday.
Areas of impact include the areas previously mentioned and extending further north into Dubois and surrounding communities. The warnings will also impact communities southwest of Idaho Falls, continuing as far as Shoshone.
“For the first extreme cold warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 24 below expected. For the second extreme cold warning, dangerously cold wind chills as low as 25 below expected,” the NWS says on its website.
Stay warm and avoid going outside if possible. If you have to go outdoors, dress in layers. Cover your head, face, neck and hands.
Meteorologists say frostbite can occur in as little as 30 minutes in these conditions.
Monticello Montessori Charter School will have a delayed start time Wednesday due to the cold temperatures. EastIdahoNews.com will notify you of additional delays and closures as we receive them.
