Thursday night's episode of Emmerdale was filled with dramatic revelations as more of John Sugden's mysterious past came to light.
The storyline began to unravel with John's recent visit to a hospital, where a comatose man lay in bed, and it was finally revealed that the individual in question was none other than Aidan Moore.
Fans of the show may remember the enigmatic Aidan being mentioned the previous year when Victoria Sugden stumbled upon dog tags bearing his name.
John had initially claimed that Aidan was an army buddy who tragically lost his life in a bomb blast at their base, with John expressing his guilt over being unable to save his friend despite his best efforts.
However, as John's web of secrets continues to unravel, it appears that his account of Aidan's fate was a fabrication, reports Leicestershire Live.
In the latest episode, John encountered a woman named Kathleen at Aidan's bedside, and as they caught up, Kathleen expressed her conviction that the comatose man would soon regain consciousness and was aware of their conversations.
John requested some time alone with the patient, addressing him as Aidan and confirming his identity.
In a chilling monologue, John said: "Your mum still thinks you might come out of this, bless her, as if that's going to happen... you're stuck, locked in for eternity", further revealing that the emotional toll of seeing Aidan in the hospital had affected his mental well-being.
In a surprising twist, John seemed to imply that he and Aidan had been romantically involved, stating: "I've met someone, it's serious, we're in love.
"Aaron's a good person, he loves me, he tells me how much all the time. That wasn't your style, was it? You never let me forget I was second best.
"Thinking back, you were always looking over your shoulder for someone or something better, and that messed with my head. I never felt I was enough until now because Aaron's different.
"He sees me in a way you never did and he makes me feel like I matter. I love him for that. So this is goodbye, I won't come here again, it wouldn't be fair to Aaron or to you... be happy for me, Aidan."
Taking to social media, viewers were quick to share their theories on what happened to Aidan. One person said: "Aiden is in a coma cos John put him there - he implied he made it happen when they had a disagreement of some sort - also, looks like it was diabetes related as he mentioned something about saving Jacob with the epi-pen - maybe he hid the epi-pen from Aidan and made him go into a coma ??? Just brain-storming!"
Elsewhere, another wrote: "He purposely put him in the coma situation he is cos they had a disagreement. He made a point of saying that Aidan and him disagreed about sommat."
A different soap watcher put: "Maybe John made Aidan ill then tried to save him but went wrong", another wrote: "Maybe he knew something that’s why he made him ill" to which a different viewer suggested: "Maybe he was going to leave him?"
Meanwhile, other soap watchers think Aidan is John's husband and he will crash his wedding to Aaron after waking up. One person said: "I think it’s johns husband" to which a different account wrote: "yes and that's probably why he needs Aiden dead,so he can marry Aarron...what you betting Aiden wakes up...his mother's already hinted at that happening!"
Another suggested: "Was waiting for John to leave the room and he opens his eyes! Bet he’ll turn up at the wedding" while a different viewer added: "I think aiden is johns civil partner hence him flipping at idea of wedding in May as he can't remarry as long as aiden still alive."
Emmerdale airs weeknights at 7:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with an hour-long episode on Thursdays.
