Eamonn Holmes 'relies on a lot of people' as he shares heartbreaking health update

6 months ago 361

GB News presenter Eamonn Holmes has shared his struggles with mobility and reliance on others due to needing a wheelchair.

During a discussion about the Christmas travel warnings and with advice suggesting avoiding the M25 for six hours this weekend, Eamonn reflected on his difficulties with transport on the Breakfast show.

"The train definitely could be a dream, but I'm now sort of wheelchair laden.. you rely on a lot of people to get you on and off. It's very, very difficult doing that," he opened up, adding, "I just threw that in...it's not a concern to anybody, but there we go," expressing his feelings of resignation.

Co-host Isabel Webster quickly showed her support, saying, "Well, it's a consideration lots of people in the same position as you, Eamonn," acknowledging the challenges faced by those with mobility issues.

Eamonn has been dealing with significant mobility problems following back surgery and now frequently uses a wheelchair, though he can take short walks with the help of a walker.

Earlier this year, in January, he talked candidly about his personal "epidemic of pain," which necessitates the use of a walking stick and a wheelchair for mobility, reports the Express.

The experienced breakfast television host has grappled with the "harsh reality" of potentially never walking unaided again but holds onto hope for improvement.

His condition also meant he sadly missed his mother Josie's funeral in November 2023, leading him to reflect bitterly, "It's as if somebody up there is playing with my life.

"In the past year, I've had an operation on my back which went wrong and has confined me to a wheelchair. I've fallen and broken my shoulder. Honestl,y you could not make it up."

While the surgery did alleviate some of his discomfort, he was then confronted with the devastating news that he would no longer be able to walk. Speaking to Gerry Kelly for the Irish Independent, he shared: "I have tried every treatment, but you go, 'Maybe I'll never get out of it,' which is a harsh reality to face."

Isabel has previously demonstrated her compassion for his predicament. In a joint interview with Hello! Magazine, Eamonn reflected on the "physically challenging" period when he and Isabel were reporting from outside Buckingham Palace following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

"There was scaffolding everywhere, and if I needed the toilet, it took me ages to get around it. It was humiliating and really wearing me down."

"But on the long route back to the car, Isabel took my weight and steered me," he remembered.

Isabel added that she "went into nurse mode" and did everything she could to assist Eamonn.
