Dunmurry man facing drugs charges asks for curfew change to see SSE Arena boxing

A man facing drugs charges today asked for his curfew to be changed so he could see a family member boxing at the SSE Arena.

The request to extend Brendan Glacken’s curfew so he could watch the full Nations Fight Night event tomorrow evening was made at Belfast Crown Court.

Glacken’s solicitor Joe Hackett asked Judge Sandra Crawford to extend his client’s current 11pm curfew to 1am which would allow him to attend the sporting event to the end then return back to his home. Mr Hackett also revealed that Glacken wanted to attend the full event as his half-brother was on the bill.

From Milfort Mews, 26-year Glacken has been charged with four drugs offences dating back to June 2023 and is due to be arraigned next month.

Making the application, Mr Hackett told the court the variation to extend the curfew to 1am was being opposed by the PSNI because it was deemed “too late” as it was the police’s view that the boxing event “should be over by then”.

A Crown barrister confirmed police were objecting to the 1am variation but were “content” with an extension of curfew from 11pm to midnight. Judge Crawford said that in the circumstances she was prepared to extend the curfew until midnight but nothing beyond that.

She added the application was “very much a one-off” for a “particular sporting event” involving a relation of Glacken’s.

The Judge told Mr Hackett to make it clear to his client that today’s ruling “is not to be taken as an indication for further applications on his part”.
