4 months ago 285

More than 40 flights due to leave Northern Ireland today (Jan 24) have already been cancelled due to the freak weather caused by Storm Éowyn.

Strong wings and dangerous conditions have prompted the Met Office to issue a rare red weather warning, while the PSNI has declared a major incident.

George Best Belfast City Airport has already culled 29 flights from its schedule today, while at Belfast International Airport 16 have fallen victim to the storm. City of Derry Airport has cancelled two and many more are expected across all three airports as the day goes on.

At the City, just 11 departures and 12 arrivals remain scheduled. Some 25 arrivals have already been cancelled. At Aldergrove, many flights are still showing as scheduled but several of those face long delays.

Translink is not operating any airport bus services for the duration of the red weather warning.

In a statement at 12.15am, a Belfast International Airport spokesperson said: "Operations at Belfast International Airport will be limited during Friday’s red weather warning as Northern Ireland prepares for the impact of Storm Éowyn.

"PSNI have advised that people should not travel on roads within the Met Office’s Red weather warning area – passengers and staff are urged to follow that advice.

"Most of our airline partners have suspended flights for the morning period and passengers have been advised. If you are due to travel on Friday 24th January please check with your airline for latest up to date flight information."

Belfast City Airport said in a statement: "Due to Storm Éowyn. weather warnings have been issued across the UK for Friday 24th January 2025.

"As a result of the adverse weather expected, there may be some disruption to flights due to arrive and depart from Belfast City Airport. Passengers are advised check the status of their flight with the airline."

City of Derry Airport said last night: "Loganair have cancelled all flights from City of Derry on Friday 24th January due to storm Éowyn. Some disruption to other flight schedules may be expected, passengers should monitor the status of their flight with the airline, further updates will be shared when available.

"As a result of all morning flights being cancelled, currently the airport building and car park will be closed until 11.45am and the airfield closed until 12.30pm."
