Coronation Street star addresses show axe and says 'nothing goes to plan'

Coronation Street favourite Colson Smith has shared a laugh, admitting that his last day on the iconic ITV soap was one where "nothing went to plan".

The 26-year-old has left the show after spending 14 years playing Craig Tinker. Viewers have watched as Craig battled against OCD and became a police officer in Weatherfield.

Colson finished filming his final scenes however on March 21. The cast then went to celebrate the occasion with a night out at El Gato Negro Tapas in Manchester, reports Leicestershire Live.

Speaking on the On the Sofa podcast with fellow Corrie stars Ben Price (Nick Tilsley) and Jack P. Shepherd (David Platt), Colson revealed his final scenes didn't quite go as expected. Ben joked the last day was "two Roy's rolls and out".

Colson quipped: "It was classic Corrie in that nothing quite goes to plan. I was meant to be on set until half 12 and then when we broke for tea at half past nine, I was like, 'I'm going to be out of here by half past 11.

"I think I was done by about 10 to 12, wasn't I? We were well ahead."

Jack chimed in, describing how he initially wasn't sure if he'd get to see his mate on his final day but ended up making it due to both their shoots being ahead of schedule. He said: "Luckily, my unit, because I was on a different unit, they were a bit ahead so it kind of worked out.

"I was on a different shoot but luckily I managed to get there just so I could hear them basically say, 'And cut and that's a finish on the scene and a wrap on Colson'."

Ben, who has portrayed Nick since 2009, provided a glimpse into the traditional farewell ceremony for departing Corrie stars. He explained: "What traditionally happens is you're all waiting behind, they'll say it's your last take but it's not your last take, they lie to you and go, 'We need just one more' but they don't. And that's when everyone piles into Roy's Rolls and goes, 'Now that's a wrap', and then you get a round of applause, the Champagne, the big card."

Colson explained he received a "little bottle of Champagne and a card" from show bosses before a touching gift from his colleagues. The keen runner was given a medal showing off his Coronation Street "stats" as well as jetting off on a running holiday.

Colson expressed his gratitude, saying, "It was very, very sweet."

Last year, Colson revealed that the show's management had informed him that they would be writing his character, PC Tinker, out of the show. Sharing the news on social media, Colson stated: "Autumn last year I was told that Craig Tinker's time on the Cobbles is to come to end in 2025.

"I've loved every single second of my 14-year stay as a resident on the greatest street in the world. I feel incredibly lucky to have grown up in, on and around Coronation Street. I've learned pretty much everything about life from the people who call it home. I'm excited to play out the exit story for Our Craigy."
