Coronation Street viewers believe they've figured out the true identity of Dee-Dee Bailey's midwife, and it spells trouble.
In a recent episode, fans saw Dee-Dee (played by Channique Sterling-Brown) go into labour on the popular ITV soap. The character, who shares her baby with the late villain Joel Deering (portrayed by Calum Lill), was killed off last year by Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton).
During the episode aired on Monday (March 30), Dee-Dee experienced severe pains and was advised to visit the maternity unit. Despite high blood pressure, the overworked staff didn't take her concerns seriously and sent her home.
Back at home, Dee-Dee's friend Alya Nazir (Sair Khan) insisted that the nurses were wrong to dismiss her. Shortly after, Dee-Dee's waters broke, and she was hurried back to the hospital with her family in tow.
At the hospital, Dee-Dee suffered in pain without a bed until her father Ed (Trevor Michael Georges) intervened. He was outraged when a white midwife made a demeaning comment, suggesting "women like you [Dee-Dee] you are built for this", reports Plymouth Live.
Ed eventually found a black midwife who provided the needed assistance. A doctor then diagnosed Dee-Dee with pre-eclampsia, necessitating an immediate delivery. Following the birth of her daughter, Dee-Dee felt extremely unwell, a concern that was overlooked by a white nurse.
The gripping storyline on Coronation Street saw Dee-Dee Bailey face traumatic events after giving birth, as the new mother was accused of being aggressive by a nurse for refusing skin-to-skin contact. Tensions escalated when Dee-Dee collapsed unconscious due to heavy bleeding – an issue she'd previously raised with the medical staff and was ignored.
This tense ordeal led to an emergency operation for Dee-Dee, who had suffered a haemorrhage, leaving her family in apprehension as she underwent surgery.
These harrowing scenes signpost a new racial injustice storyline crafted for Dee-Dee, provoking Coronation Street fans to speculate about the dismissive midwife's true identity, suspecting that she has links to past villains from the show.
Discussions among fans are rife, with one theory suggesting that the midwife could have been recruited by Joel's father, reminiscent of his actions during Lauren's court case. Others conjectured that she might be covertly aligned with the extremist group associated with Lauren's father.
Theories aside, social media reactions are intense, with one viewer venting their dismay on the forum: "That awful midwife needs sacking! ! She said she was aggressive when she wasn't and when she complained. She felt unwell dismissed her and said it was just being a 1st time mum! She needs to go that's not lack of staffing but lack of knowledge and empathy!"
Fans quickly took to the comments section to share their theories. One fan speculated: "She was out of order. Maybe she's been put there by Joel's dad for revenge?" Another agreed, saying: "That's an excellent theory!".
A different viewer suggested a possible connection to Reece Bolton, commenting: "I think she could know Lauren's racist dad? Just my opinion, but I could be wrong. I agree that she is vile and nasty though." Another fan responded: "Might be onto something!"
Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
