A musician from Co Down is carrying on her dad's legacy with a special gig in his memory. Deborah Fitzsimons has been performing in venues across Northern Ireland and in Belfast since she was 17.

The Downpatrick woman has been inspired by her dad, Damien Fitzsimons, who played in renowned local bands Purple Haze and Red Biddy. Having often shared the stage with him, Deborah is now determined to continue his musical legacy following his death in 2023.

On Saturday, February 8, she is paying tribute to her dad with a special live music event in his memory to raise funds for the Macmillan Unit in the Ulster Hospital.

The event, entitled ‘If the Music Fitz,’ will take place at Denvir’s Coaching Inn in Downpatrick and showcase performances from 14 local bands, including musicians who played alongside Damien over the years.

Speaking about the musical influence of her dad, Deborah said: “My dad raised us on all the best music from the 60s and 70s – Bob Dylan, Dire Straits, and the Eagles. My favourite gig was with my dad one Christmas at the Harp Bar in Belfast. Everyone was in a great mood, singing along and chanting – it was magical.”

Deborah describes her music as a blend of pop, country, and blues, drawing inspiration from contemporary artists such as Amy Winehouse, Frank Ocean, Zach Bryan, Chris Stapleton, and Luke Bryan.

“I love the storytelling in their music,” she explained. “I try to engage with the creative process constantly. Anytime I’m out for a walk or doing something, lyrics just pop into my head and I have to note them down.”

A talented songwriter, Deborah released her debut singles last year, The Gem and Final Ending. "The Gem was a tribute to my dad – that was our nickname for him,” she said. “Final Ending touches on bittersweet moments in life. It was released in October and has already had 10,000 streams. The response has been amazing.”

With growing success, Deborah hopes to take her musical career further in 2025. “I’m constantly gigging. Next year, I’m planning to release my next single, followed by an EP later in the year. I’d love to play bigger stages and festivals,” she said.

“In November, I attended the NI Music Prize and met so many talented local artists. My dream would be to win an award for my music there in the future.”

‘If the Music Fitz’ kicks off at 8pm on Saturday 8 February 2025 at Denvir’s Coaching Inn. A warm welcome is extended to all, with a suggested voluntary £5 donation at the door. All proceeds will go to the Macmillan Cancer Unit at the Ulster Hospital.
