A five-year-old child has died after being struck by a car in Co Laois.
The collision involving a pedestrian and a car occurred at Kilminchy in Portlaoise at approximately 4.20pm on Saturday.
The pedestrian, a boy aged 5, was fatally injured in the collision and was removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital Portlaoise in a serious condition.
He was sadly pronounced dead a short time later and a post mortem examination will take place in due course. The driver of the car, a woman aged in her 40s, was not injured.
The road is currently closed and will remain closed overnight and a technical examination is due to be carried out by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators on Sunday morning. Gardai are appealing to anyone who may have witnessed this collision to contact them.
In a statement, a garda spokesperson said: "Any road users who may have camera footage (including dash-cam) and were travelling in Kilminchy, Portlaoise, Co. Laois between 4:00pm and 5:00pm this afternoon are asked to make this footage available to investigating Gardai.
"Anyone with information is asked to contact Portlaoise Garda Station on 057 867 4100, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station."
Tragically, the five-year-old boy was the second person to lose their life on Irish roads in the less than an hour after a man was killed following a collision involving a quad bike and motorcycle in Co Westmeath.
Gardai and emergency were called to the scene following the fatal road traffic collision at Ballynascarry in Finea at approximately 3.30pm this afternoon.
The driver of the quad bike, a man aged in his 20s, was fatally injured in the collision and was pronounced dead at the scene. His body has since been removed to the mortuary in Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar where a post mortem examination will take place in due course.
Another man aged in his 20s, who was the passenger of the quad bike, was removed from the scene to Midland Regional Hospital Tullamore with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the motorcycle, a man aged in his 20s, was removed from the scene and rushed to the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
