REXBURG — Police are issuing a reminder to pedestrians to use caution while crossing the street after two teenagers were nearly hit by a car Thursday in Rexburg.

Dashcam video, shared on the Rexburg Police Department Facebook page, shows the two teens crossing the road at the intersection of 12th West and 7th South.

Vehicles in one lane stop for the kids as one pedestrian grabs an orange flag and both run across the street.

It appears the driver of a vehicle in the lane furthest from the teenagers is unable to see them crossing and nearly hits both of them.

“It’s common knowledge that vehicles are required to yield to pedestrians crossing within a crosswalk. However, that does not absolve pedestrians from their responsibility to exercise caution,” the department’s Facebook post says.

Idaho law states, “No pedestrian shall suddenly leave a curb or other place of safety and walk or run into the path of a vehicle which is so close as to constitute an immediate hazard.”

Fortunately, the teenagers were not injured and appear to be fine. Police are using the incident to remind everyone about the importance of being aware while on the road.

“We ask both drivers and pedestrians to exercise the utmost caution at crosswalks to keep each other safe. Let’s all get to our destinations in one piece,” the Facebook post says.
