The Education Authority have said that they are working to support the staff and students at the school where attended by a young who was killed after getting off a school bus in Co Derry on Wednesday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to the tragedy around 4pm on March 5. Officers said that there was a large crowd in the area at the time of the incident and have asked the public not to share footage from the scene on social media.
Police had initially reported that the child who died was an 11-year-old girl but have since confirmed that the child was aged 12 and due to turn 13 next month.
In a statement on Thursday afternoon, the Education Authority offered their condolences to the family and friends of the child and confirmed that their Critical Incident Response Team are working with the child's school to support those impacted by the tragedy.
A spokesperson for the Education Authority (EA) said: “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of a pupil following a road traffic incident which occurred on the Hillhead Road, outside Castledawson yesterday afternoon (Wednesday 5 March).
“Our sincere condolences are with the family, friends, fellow pupils and staff at the school, and all those affected by this tragic incident.
“The EA’s Critical Incident Response Team are supporting the school during this difficult time and will provide emotional support to both students and staff.
“We would kindly ask that the family, school and wider community are afforded the time and space to grieve this unimaginable loss.
“A PSNI investigation into the serious collision is ongoing."
