A man who fatally attacked a barrister in a Perth hotel room has been sentenced to life imprisonment, with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years.
Cameron James Pearson, 44, pleaded guilty to the murder of 34-year-old lawyer Alice McShera, who was killed on October 30, 2023, at Crown Towers Perth.
The Western Australia Supreme Court heard that the pair had been staying at the hotel for several days prior to the incident. During that time, they had consumed alcohol and methamphetamines.
The fatal attack occurred after Ms McShera told Pearson she wanted to end their relationship. Prosecutors said Pearson reacted violently during an argument in the hotel room.
The court was told Pearson struck Ms McShera multiple times with a champagne bottle, causing fatal injuries. He later told police he “lost it” during the confrontation.
Ms McShera’s body was discovered after her family raised concerns when she failed to attend a scheduled hospital appointment. Hotel staff attempted to check on the room but were initially unable to gain entry.
When staff returned with security, they entered and found Ms McShera deceased inside. Pearson was also located in the room and was taken into custody.
Prosecutor Justin Whalley told the court that Pearson admitted to police he had struck Ms McShera during an argument. The assault caused severe head injuries, including trauma to the brain.
The court heard that Pearson did not seek medical assistance for Ms McShera following the attack.
During sentencing, Justice Michael Gething described the killing as a serious act of intimate partner violence. He said Ms McShera was an innocent victim who had no warning of the attack.
The judge noted that the offence occurred in a private setting where there was a high level of trust between the pair. He also emphasized the severity of the violence involved.
Pearson’s defense argued the attack was spontaneous and not premeditated, stating the weapon used was not brought to the scene with intent to kill.
However, the court determined the seriousness of the crime warranted a life sentence.
Justice Gething ordered that Pearson must serve at least 19 years in prison before becoming eligible for parole.
Authorities have not indicated any further legal proceedings in the case.
