MERIDIAN – And you are?
Skyline and Blackfoot are probably getting tired of seeing each other.
It was Round 4 in the past four weeks as the 5A District 6 teams met Thursday in the first round of the 5A state tournament.
Blackfoot had won the past two meetings, including downing the Grizzlies in last week’s district championship game.
So how’d this one go?
“Grit,” Blackfoot coach Raimee Odum said when describing the Broncos’ 50-45 victory. “I just told the girls that there’s been plenty of games that I played in or coached that I’ve seen teams crumble. Skyline played so well … I’m super proud of my girls. They never gave up.”
Broncos center Cambrie Waterhouse was a force inside in the last meeting and she nearly had a double-double in the first half on Thursday, recording nine points and eight rebounds as the Broncos led by as many as 10 in the second quarter.
Shay Shippen took over, helping the Grizzlies pull within 27-23 at the half.
A 3-pointer by Macy Marlow midway through the third quarter gave Skyline a 33-32 lead and the Grizzlies added to the advantage as Madison Merzlock hit a 3-pointer and then added a couple of free throws.
The game came down to the final minute and Blackfoot closed with an 11-2 run to secure the win.
Waterhouse finished with a team-high 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Broncos (19-5). Addison Tanner had 10 points.
Shippen topped Skyline with 18 points and Marlow added 10 points.
Blackfoot will face top-seeded Pocatello in Friday’s 5A semifinals. Skyline (16-9) plays Bishop Kelly in a consolation bracket matchup at 2 p.m.
