Former Manchester United striker Louis Saha has hit out at Roy Keane for his "harsh" criticism of Bruno Fernandes.
Keane, 53, has repeatedly derided Fernandes ever since the United midfielder was handed the captaincy by Erik ten Hag in the summer of 2023. The former Red Devils skipper often slams the Portuguese star's leadership qualities - or lack thereof - while also accusing him of being petulant and too quick to complain on the pitch.
While noting Fernandes' contributions, Saha, whose AxisStars company is now worth an estimated £4.3 billion, hit out at Keane's critiques. The Frenchman, while speaking to Genting Casinos, suggested it could contribute to his exit from the club.
"He could be tempted [to leave] because yes, he has proved over the years that he plays to a certain standard," Saha said. "He plays really well and is still being harshly attacked.
"I always come to the defence of Bruno because, as I said, I try to explain what I see and I think it's completely unfair. It’s interesting that Roy Keane has criticised him.
"I understand and I respect his point because he knows his position. He knows what leaders need to do. That's not easy when you are a fan, you criticise harshly. But I would still say it is harsh, because Bruno deserves respect, and as a human being you make mistakes and all sorts.
"But I think he has too much weight on his shoulders and at some point he may consider other opportunities. Whenever he talks, I don't see someone that just wants to play for the club as much as he can. He is really loyal. He seems to be a very loyal player. So I do think that he will be likely to stay.”
Despite United enduring another frustrating campaign, Fernandes has still managed to contribute 16 goals and 15 assists in 44 appearances in all competitions. He has hit a particularly strong run of form, contributing three goals and three assists in his last four Premier League matches.
Meanwhile, Saha, who shared a dressing room with Keane during his time at United, has certainly feathered his nest well since his retirement from football in 2013. When he hung his boots up, the Frenchman ventured into business, where he has become an extremely wealthy individual.
His company AxiStars describes itself as a 'Global Support Network for Pro-Talent' where 'Pro-Athletes and entertainers can connect with each other, generate income and upskill'. The ex-Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham forward co-founded the company with Kate Hamer, a marketing professional.
The company's value is seven times higher than Cristiano Ronaldo's £600m net worth. According to sources close to the company, more than 550 ex-athletes are signed up with the firm.
In an interview with the Guardian on his company, Saha said: "I still get asked for advice by different people on a daily basis. For instance, my agent called me to say he had a talented French footballer who he wants to bring to England, and asked me for advice on how to create a tailor-made training programme. I put him in touch with people I used to work with.
"This kind of player could join Axis as he can then search for a personal coach in his region. It is a hard process but it’s so rewarding, because if I can help 100,000 people, it’s the best thing I’ve ever done.”
