Ishii had support from 51.1% of voters compared to 48.9% for Councilmember Sophie Hahn, a difference of 1,039 votes, once second-choice votes from supporters of former Councilmember Kate Harrison and the race’s two other candidates were taken into account. Ishii also led Hahn in first-choice votes by 337.
The update appears to put Ishii — an education consultant and former president of the League of Women Voters Berkeley Albany Emeryville, who had never run for public office before launching her campaign last year — on the precipice of becoming the city’s top public official.
It’s not clear how many votes remain uncounted in the race, however. Alameda County Registrar of Voters Tim Dupuis told Berkeleyside earlier this week that Wednesday’s update would capture the “vast majority” of the about 18,000 confirmed ballots that remained unprocessed countywide as of the last update on Friday.
