The family of a young Belfast boy who has been waiting for a heart transplant since June 2018, has urged the public to have a conversation around organ donation.
Dáithí Mac Gabhann from Ballymurphy, was born with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS). Despite his incredible resilience, the 8-year-old's health is declining. He now uses a wheelchair and relies on oxygen at home.
On Wednesday December 11, Organ Donation Discussion Day, the child's father says Dáithí dreams of receiving a new heart from Santa this Christmas, so he can have the energy to play with his friends and experience life as any child should.

The Donate4Dáithí campaign, led by Dáithí’s family, continues to raise awareness about the importance of organ donation.
Dáithí’s dad, Máirtín Mac Gabhann, said: "Words can save lives. That’s the reality of organ donation, and for Dáithí, those words are his best chance. Dáithí’s health is getting worse, and it’s heart-breaking to see him understanding more of his reality. All he wants for Christmas is to be like his friends—to have the energy to laugh, run, and play like any normal 8-year-old.
"This Organ Donation Discussion Day is a chance for us all to share our organ donation decision with our loved ones. Whether it’s over breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even in the family group chat, reminding our families of our wishes is so important.
"At the end of the day, loved ones have the final say on organ donation, and that’s why sharing your decision could save up to nine lives. Please, for Dáithí and so many others waiting, have that conversation today."
Each year, countless lives are transformed through organ donation, yet only 50% of families agree to proceed with donation if they are unsure of their loved one’s wishes. This figure rises to 90% when the decision is known. By recording your decision on the NHS Organ Donor Register and discussing it with your family, you can provide clarity and hope for those waiting for a life-saving transplant.
Organ Donation Discussion Day is not just an opportunity to consider your own decision but also to remind loved ones of yours. One simple conversation could mean the difference between life and death for someone like Dáithí.
