Belfast bar offering 'warm space, cuppa and a chat' for vulnerable residents

An East Belfast bar is hoping to help vulnerable members of its community this winter by offering a warm space for people to come together for a cup of tea and a chat.

After hearing reports that elderly members of its community had been going to local shopping centres in order to stay warm during recent cold weather The Longfellow Bar is inviting members of the public to join them in their community warm space in order to help them with their heating bills.

The bar on My Lady's Road has said that it is aiming to offer a warm and cosy environment for people to come together and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat.

It has also received a donation from East Belfast charity Team Dot to provide tea and biscuits to those who are visiting and one of £100 from local residents Lee & Yvonne which can be used to purchase heating for anyone who is in need.

The Longfellow Bar said: "As the colder weather approaches, we want to get a message through to all the older members of our community, please don’t feel the need to go to Shopping Centres just to feel some heat, we heard that Pensioners were taking themselves to Connswater Shopping Centre just so they could be warm..

"We understand that the Weather Fuel payment has been cut and some won’t be entitled to it at all so we would like to let you all know you that you’re all more than welcome to join us here, for a chat, cup of tea, and heating, all free of charge, as we are not just a bar but the hub of the community, and if we can help in any way, we will..

"Remember Help the Aged, because at one time they were just like you.

"Please give this a wee share to get it out and spread the word to our vulnerable that there's a place for them to come along and enjoy some heat, a chat and a cuppa."
