EastEnders star Natalie Cassidy has opened up about her recent departure from the hit soap, revealing she's not pining for the streets of Albert Square just yet.
The 41 year old actress, best known for portraying Sonia Fowler on the BBC series, appeared on the latest episode of Saturday Kitchen with chefs Donal Skehan, Jeremy Lee and wine connoisseur Olly Smith.
During a light-hearted grilling from host Matt Tebbutt about leaving EastEnders, Cassidy signalled she's content giving Sonia a bit of downtime at present.
Matt cheekily asked: "So let's talk about EastEnders. Are you missing it?".
Taking a moment before answering, Natalie confessed: "Err not just yet! It feels like I'm still on a break if you like because I've only been gone a month or so.", reports Plymouth Live.
Not letting her off the hook that easily, Matt chimed in: "And you weren't killed off!".
With a touch of relief, Natalie said: "No, very very grateful that the door has been left open, I really am. But you never know."
She acknowledged, "It's nice to rest characters as well! Sonia has been around since 1993, people have grown up with her, you know. It's nice to have a rest," conceding that fans may appreciate the hiatus as well.
Cassidy first stepped into Sonia's shoes in 1993 and has since been involved in a myriad of significant plots, navigating teenage pregnancy, intricate family dramas, and being wrongfully jailed.
Confirming her mixed sentiments on waving goodbye to the series, Natalie stated: "I feel extremely sad to be writing this, but also very excited. After another 11 solid years back on the square, I have decided it's time to move on to pastures new."
Natalie also expressed her thanks to the show's executive producer, Chris Clenshaw, for including her in the significant anniversary celebrations which aired in February.
Chris Clenshaw commended the star's contribution, highlighting her involvement in some of the show's most memorable and dramatic storylines, and recognised her as a popular favourite among viewers.
Despite leaving the show, Natalie remains active and engaged, continuing to host her own podcast. Additionally, she also presents Channel 4's consumer programme What's The Big Deal? where she is seen trying out the latest gadgets.
